Hampers - a (very) brief history

'Hamper' is a term for a large wicker basket often used to transport food - considered ideal due to its good ventilation and sturdiness.

Traditionally (up until mid 20th Century), a hamper of food or clothing would often be given as a charitable donation to those in need. The wicker basket which contained the donated items would then serve as a useful storage item by the recipient.

Today, hampers are more often given as gifts of indulgence - usually to mark a special occasion such as Christmas. Hampers tend to include food, wine and gifts.
