Organic poultry and eggs
 Poultry
farming is one of those areas where there has been an unacceptable degree
of compromise by some organic accreditors. The Organic, Farmers and Growers
group allows organic certification for flocks of up to 7,000 birds arguing
that if the more rigid Soil Association standard of up to 500 birds would
put up to 90% of free range units out of business.
How can you be sure about the welfare of the bird that produced the meat
or egg on your plate? The simple answer is that you can be pretty sure
that an organic label indicates a different world for the birds compared
to the nightmare conditions present in the industrial levels of intensive
production. Beyond this lies degrees of acceptability with the soil association
mark being one of the best indications of high animal welfare.
The conditions required to meet these more stringent requirements allow
for the birds to be kept in flocks of less than 500, have free access
to the organic pasture and be fed on at least 80% organic non-GM feed.
Due to the lack of artificial colouring in feed you may well notice that
organic eggs are somewhat paler than others. Organic eggs are expensive
when compared to eggs farmed intensively, but the difference in taste
is recognised by most people.
